Flying Tips and Tricks for First Time Flyers

Air travel. Flying. Aeronautical passenger. Whatever words

you use airplane travel can be an exhausting experience. Whether you are practically a bird in the sky or jumping on a plane for the first time, these flying tips can make the experience easier and more convenient.

According to statistics from the economist the chance of a plane crashing are only 1 in 11...million

Picking Your Flight

Not all of us are able to choose exactly what days we take off work and this can lead to a narrower window for travel. However, if you do have some flexibility, choosing flights during the week or incredibly early in the morning or late at night can save you a lot of money and waiting in line.

Not all airlines are created equal and sometimes picking the cheapest flight can lead to unexpected fees that end up costing you the same as a ticket with a major airline. Do a little research into luggage fees and what exactly is included with your ticket to avoid sticker shock at the check in counter when that additional bag ends up costing you as much as the plane ticket. 2.

Airport Parking-Probably Not Worth It

This seems like a no-brainer, but with some simple planning you can save on money and stress at the beginning of your journey. Parking at the airport can cost between $10-$55 per day. Even on the low end that is a lot of souvenirs or a spa treatment you can purchase instead. If you live in an urban area, taking a

taxi, ride share, or just asking a friend saves you money and you can be dropped off at the departures area instead of having to walk from the parking lot or taking a shuttle.

If you are traveling with a big group, think about splurging on a car service. Using a private shuttle or car company will take away a lot of the worry when you return home, since the driver will track your flight, meaning they will be waiting for you as soon you walk outside.

Check In

Check in online! If you decide to check in at the airport be prepared for long lines and waiting. If you need to check a bag, some people suggest standing in a line near the first class/ business class line. There are typically less people checking in there, and you can sometimes get checked in even if you are flying economy.

Security

There are two important things to remember to get through security quickly: wearing the right clothes and being able to quickly remove items that need to be in separate bins. Items such as laptops, e-readers, and handheld game consoles must be taken out and run through the x-ray machine separately.

Clothing-wear shoes that can be easily slipped on and off and socks! Also, wear a belt with a plastic buckle to avoid any accidental pants falling incidents when you must remove your belt to go through the body scanner.

If you think you are going to fly more then three times a year, then TSA Pre-Check is the way to go. It’s a little pricey but being able to quickly get through the line without having to remove your shoes or any items from your luggage is worth it.

The Gate

If you have a long wait or layover between flights, look into a day pass for one of the airport lounges. It is worth it to have a quiet spot with charging stations, comfortable seating, food and usually drinks are included as well. Also, you may already be qualified if you have a premium credit card. If you are trying to save, go to a gate that is empty and you don’t have to fight for space or charging docks. Just be sure you listen for when your flight is called to give yourself enough time to get to you gate.
